D-Day Tank Warfare. Armored combat in the normandy campaign june-august 1944. The Normandy campaign can be broken down into three main phases. The first stage was the amphibious assault itself, a monumental undertaking on a scale never before attempted. Tanks played a small role in the landings, though many specialized types were developed, especially by Britain, to assist in capturing the beach-head. The next stage was securing and defending the beach-head.
