British roads Oxfordshire past and present
British roads Oxfordshire past and present. In 1948 there were less than four million vehicles on British roads. Today there are more than 24 million - far more than anyone could have predicted. This collection of 'past and present' photographs highlights the effect that this enormous growth in road traffic has had on our roads - and our lives - since the war. Each pair of photographs shows the same scene from as near as possible the same viewpoint, but separated by up to four or five decades. They remind us of the times when the car was still a luxury, when motorways and bypasses were comparatively rare, and bollards, road humps and pelican crossings were unheard of. This is the second volume in this new 'past and present' series, and contains some 170 photographs.
