History of the German Air Force. Most people today associate German military aviation almost entirely with Hitler's Luftwaffe which played such an important part in the rise of Nazi Germany and in Hitler's triumphs of the early war years. A liitle more prompting will bring to mind the great air aces of World War I, a gallery of notable names headed by von Richtofen, the Red Baron. Today, there are two German Air Forces - East and West German - which are among the strongest and most efficient of their respective alliances.
