Ravenna Art and History. Today a wide expanse of well cultivated land surrounds Ravenna, but in ancient times the city, which arose upon a group of sand-hills, was washed by the sea and surrounded by marshes. The group of small islands on which the early centre of the city was built, was, however, not entirely isolated, for, north and south, it was connected with that chain of dunes which extended to the delta of the river Po on one side, and on the other to the environs of Cervia.
