Self-Propelled Anti-Tank and Anti-Aircraft Guns. Aircraft and tanks were the weapons that dominated World War 2; it is not surprising that a great deal of effort and imagination went into producing a weapon system to fight these two highly mobile war machines. The answer to both turned out to be a self-propelled gun platform. In the anti-tank role, guns were mounted on a variety of vehicles including lorries, half-tracks and tank chassis. The Germans called them Panzerjäger, the Americans Tank Destroyers; and the Russians produced their SU series of self-propelled guns.
