Founded as the armed element of the Third Reich's internal security force, the Waffen SS rapidly outgrew its limited peacetime role to become the largest - and most ruthless - elite fighting force to see action during World War II. Initially an armed guard for the protection of Adolf Hitler, once war had been declared the Waffen SS developed into one of the most effective armored spearheads at the disposal of the Wehrmacht, gaining a series of spectacular victories against the Allies in the West in 1940, in the Balkans in 1941 and above all during the invasion of the Soviet Union.
